What Does Grief Feel Like?
Grief is more than sadness. It can affect your thoughts, emotions, relationships, body, and daily functioning.
You may experience:
-
Waves of sadness or emotional pain
-
Anger, guilt, regret, or resentment
-
Emotional numbness or disconnection
-
Anxiety about the future
-
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
-
Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
-
Feeling isolated or misunderstood
-
Questioning your identity, beliefs, or purpose
-
Difficulty returning to routines
-
Feeling unexpectedly triggered by memories, anniversaries, or reminders
Grief can also involve moments of laughter, gratitude, connection, and joy.
Experiencing happiness doesn't mean you've forgotten your loss. Experiencing sadness months or years later doesn't mean you've failed to heal.
Although grief is a natural response to loss, some people develop prolonged grief disorder, depression, PTSD, or other concerns that may benefit from more specialized treatment.
Counseling can help you understand your experiences and determine what support may be most helpful.
Grief Isn't Something You Simply Get Over
Grief changes us.
Sometimes it arrives suddenly, following the death of someone we love. Other times, it develops slowly through a relationship ending, a family estrangement, a difficult diagnosis, or the realization that life isn't unfolding the way we imagined.
You may feel sadness, anger, guilt, confusion, numbness, or even relief. You may experience several of these emotions in the same day.
And sometimes, the hardest part is feeling like the world expects you to move on before you're ready.
Grief doesn't follow a timeline. Healing doesn't mean forgetting. And moving forward doesn't mean leaving behind what mattered.
At Wholistic Wellness, we provide compassionate, individualized grief and loss counseling in Frankfort and New Lenox, Illinois.
Our therapists support children, teens, and adults navigating bereavement, relationship loss, family estrangement, major life transitions, and the emotional impact of significant changes.
Through evidence-based psychotherapy, mindfulness, somatic awareness, and compassionate emotional processing, we help clients find ways to carry their experiences while reconnecting with themselves and the world around them.
You don't have to rush your grief, minimize your loss, or navigate this chapter alone.
